Septic tank & sewage treatment services in Matlock

Matlock is built on the sides of a gorge, and almost every drainage decision here is shaped by the gradient and the limestone underneath it.

We cover Matlock, Matlock Bath, Darley Dale, Tansley, Bonsall, Winster and the Derwent valley villages for septic tank emptying, treatment plant servicing and repairs, installations and drain clearance. Our yard is about half an hour east at Handley Wood, Chesterfield.

A valley town, and what the gradient does

Matlock sits where the Derwent cuts through the limestone, and the town climbs steeply on both sides. Properties on Starkholmes, Riber, Masson and the lanes above Matlock Bath sit well above or below whatever they need to connect to, and that has consequences for off-mains drainage: tanks below houses with no fall to an outfall, outfalls a long way from the building, and a higher-than-usual proportion of systems that need a pumping station in the chain.

It also makes access a real consideration. Several properties we look after here can only be reached by a long hose run from a lane, and on a few the tanker works from a passing place with a considerable length of hose uphill. None of that is a problem if it is known in advance; it is only a problem when a firm turns up expecting to park on a drive.

Limestone, lead workings and the Derwent

The ground west of the river is carboniferous limestone, honeycombed in places with old lead mining — soughs, shafts and natural fissures. Water can disappear fast through fissured limestone without the soil treating it, which is precisely what a drainage field is supposed to do. On the Bonsall, Winster and Middleton side we design cautiously, and often a treatment plant producing a cleaner effluent is the right answer rather than relying on the ground.

The Derwent itself is the other constraint. It is a significant river with the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage corridor along it, and discharges to it are taken seriously. A septic tank discharging to the river or to a brook running into it is the arrangement the General Binding Rules no longer permit.

Lets, B&Bs and seasonal load

Matlock and Matlock Bath take a lot of visitors, and a fair number of our customers here run holiday lets, cottages and guest accommodation. Those systems see the classic seasonal pattern — quiet midweek in February, full every weekend in August — which is hard on a treatment plant’s biology. Servicing before the season rather than during it makes a noticeable difference, and it is far better to find a failing blower in March than in the middle of a bank holiday.

Before you buy up here

If you are buying a property on the valley sides, the drainage is worth a proper look before exchange. Steep sites hide long outfall runs, pumping stations nobody mentioned and the occasional discharge straight to a brook. A camera survey with tracing answers all three in one visit — when a survey is worth it.

Matlock questions

Frequently asked

Can a tanker reach a property above Matlock Bath?

Usually, with extended hose from the nearest standing. It is worth telling us what the approach is like when you book so we bring enough.

Is a drainage field possible on limestone?

Sometimes, but fissured limestone can pass water without treating it. Where that is the case a treatment plant producing a cleaner effluent is normally the correct answer.

We run a holiday let — how often should the plant be serviced?

At least annually, timed for before the season starts. Seasonal swings are hard on a plant’s biology and the first weeks of a busy period are when problems surface.

Do you cover Winster and Birchover?

Yes, along with Bonsall, Elton, Stanton in Peak and the lanes between them.

Need a tanker, a repair or a new system in Matlock?

Half an hour from the yard, with the kit for long hose runs and steep sites.
