Dronfield sits between us and Sheffield, and the lanes either side of it — Holmesfield, Millthorpe, Apperknowle, Unstone — are full of properties off the mains.
We cover Dronfield, Coal Aston, Dronfield Woodhouse and the surrounding villages for septic tank emptying, treatment plant servicing and repairs, new installations and drain clearance. Our yard at Handley Wood is about fifteen minutes away, so local call-outs are genuinely local.
Dronfield proper — the town, Coal Aston, Dronfield Woodhouse, Gosforth Valley — is largely on mains drainage. Step outside it and the picture changes within a mile. West towards Holmesfield, Millthorpe, Cordwell and the Moss Valley, the land rises into gritstone country and the properties thin out into farms, cottages and converted outbuildings on their own systems. The same applies east over Apperknowle, Hundall, Marsh Lane, Troway and Ford, and north around Coal Aston’s edges towards Jordanthorpe.
These valleys are the reason a lot of Dronfield drainage work is awkward rather than difficult. Ground falls steeply, which means pumping stations are common, outfalls are often a long way from the house, and more than one property we look after has its tank on the far side of a field from anywhere a tanker can stand.
On a sloping site, gravity is both the solution and the problem. A tank below the house drains beautifully and then has nowhere to send its effluent. A tank above the house needs the whole run pumped. Either way, a lot of Moss Valley and Holmesfield properties end up with a pumping station in the chain, and that is the component most likely to need attention: floats fouling, pumps jamming on rag, non-return valves leaking so the pump does the same work twice.
Drainage fields on slopes need care too. Trenches cut across a slope rather than down it, sized from a proper percolation test, or the top end does all the work and seals while the bottom end stays dry.
The villages and hamlets around Dronfield where we most often work:
Dronfield customers often tell us they struggle to find anyone who will come out — Sheffield firms treat it as out of area and the bigger national outfits subcontract it. We are fifteen minutes away in Derbyshire with our own tankers, jetting units and camera kit, so it is simply part of our normal round. If an alarm is sounding, call rather than wait for the morning.
Yes, regularly. Those lanes and the properties off them are a standard part of our round, including the ones with awkward access.
It changes the design rather than preventing it. Sloping sites often need a pumping station, and drainage fields have to be laid across the slope and sized properly. We handle both regularly around Dronfield.
Mostly yes within the town. The off-mains properties are in the villages and valleys either side — Holmesfield, Millthorpe, Apperknowle, Marsh Lane and the farms between them.
Usually. We carry extended hose and work from the nearest firm standing where the track is soft. Tell us what the approach is like when you book and we will plan for it.
Fifteen minutes from the yard, with our own tankers and jetting kit. Call any time.
