Staveley is the next village along from our yard at Handley Wood — a few minutes’ drive, which makes it about as local as our work gets.
Our yard is on Whittington Road at Handley Wood, S43 — the same postcode district as Staveley. We empty tanks, service and repair treatment plants and pumping stations, clear and survey drains, and install new systems across Staveley, Barrow Hill, Mastin Moor, Inkersall, Duckmanton and Poolsbrook.
Staveley’s drainage history is unlike the villages west of Chesterfield. This was chemical works, ironworks and colliery country, and the legacy is everywhere underground: made ground, old industrial drainage, interceptors on yards, culverted watercourses and pipework nobody has a record of. The housing is largely on mains, but the yards, works units, farms and the properties on the fringes are a different matter.
A lot of our Staveley-area work is therefore commercial rather than domestic — interceptor cleaning on yards and hard standing, gully cleaning, jetting runs that silt up with grit, and tracing drainage on sites where the plan was lost decades ago. We have the tanker, the jetting unit and the camera on the same vehicle, which on that sort of job saves a second visit.
Head out towards Duckmanton, Sutton Scarsdale, Arkwright Town, Woodthorpe and the lanes towards Bolsover and the properties go off mains quickly. Farms and cottages on the ridge between the Rother and the Doe Lea have their own tanks, and plenty of them discharge to drainage fields in heavy ground that needs the tank kept in good order to survive.
The Doe Lea and the Rother are both close by, which is worth knowing: a septic tank discharging to a watercourse here is exactly the arrangement the General Binding Rules no longer allow, and it is the commonest reason we are called to a property around Staveley that is coming up for sale.
Staveley and the places immediately around it that we cover:
If you run a yard, a workshop or a unit around Staveley, the drainage that causes trouble is rarely the toilet block — it is the gullies and the interceptor. Both work by filling up, and both stop working silently. We have written about what that costs when it is left, and we handle the cleaning and the waste paperwork on contract across the area.
A few minutes. We are at Handley Wood on Whittington Road, S43 2PW — the same postcode district.
Yes — interceptor and gully cleaning, yard drainage, jetting, wet waste removal and scheduled contracts for units and working sites, with the waste documentation handled.
Yes. A septic tank discharging to a watercourse has to be replaced with a treatment plant or redirected to a drainage field. It is the single commonest thing that stops a sale around here.
That is routine work for us. Tracing with a camera and sonde maps the runs, the chambers and the outfall, which on old industrial sites is usually the first job.
The same postcode district as our yard. Call and we can usually be there quickly.
